about.

The Nonsense Set is a unique print project that brings together the techniques of old style letterpress with modern InDesign layouts. Inspired by alliteration, the French fold booklet captures paragraph structure and dynamic type expression. The goal was to blend the use of 1960 era letterpress with digital techniques, creating a design with depth and mystique. My story focuses on a seductress who sells her soul to alleviate her sisters illness, a trial of sacrifice and hardship.

challenge.

The primary challenge in this project was to get myself familiar with the letter press machine, as we were able to utilize a real industrial age machine in this digitally advanced time. The letterpress machine required you to manually put down letters to align, held together with strong magnets, any adjustments would take time. For my composition, i focused on the words "softly said" and "your sister" because i fell like the curvature of their path would provide for an interesting challenge to replicate using strips of chipboard as assistance.

The finished model and photoshoot produced inspires to allure the viewer, peaking their interest as the subject is forced with a supernatural sacrifice. This booklet was focused on a dramatic yet subdued tone to mirror the rise, fall, and redemption. The final products became a striking set, serving both as an exploration of typographic expression and an effective lesson of industry age machinery and its history.
